The fast bowler Poised for a Major Role in Ashes Series
The Australian skipper has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.
Australia's chief selector George Bailey has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's Ashes series.
Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.
Initial reports from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on November 21 in Perth.
He revealed that his recovery is on track and felt positive about the prospects of taking part.
"We're aware that time is getting short and various factors at play, not only the physical problem, but further aspects," the selector added.
"It's positive. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a major part. With luck from the opening match. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."
Previous Setbacks
The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand recently after medical tests showed a lower back issue.
Previous incidents include of back injuries, with setbacks in multiple past seasons forcing him out of three Australian summers in a limited period.
He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the contest.
He mentioned that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the initial match.
Alternative Arrangements
Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.
The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from the national team for their ODI contests against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of soreness in his side.
He labeled it as a "slight concern and stated that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."
"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the first Test as an all-rounder," he elaborated.
"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs in any case. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for a short period, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
