Users Coming Off Anti-Obesity Injections Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

A recent study indicates that people who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle programs.

Findings released in a leading health publication points out that while overweight people frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Users purchasing these treatments need to be informed of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery means a reversion to original mass in about a year and a half.

Comparing Approaches

The research, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of these new drugs with other pills.

The team point out that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally see a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Understanding the Rapid Rebound

Experts propose the mode of action of the injections explains the accelerated regain.

These medications copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."

A Chronic Issue?

The NHS recommend the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals argue that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the treatment is often ongoing.

This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "highlight the long-term nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

Users who have discontinued the medication report a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"It felt as if something that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," described a patient.

This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Significant Use

Figures show that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is higher among women compared to males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts caution that while the jabs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success likely depends on integrated lifestyle changes.
